Cyber Security Awareness Month

DHS

Today kicks off Cyber Security Awareness Month! All month long, we’ll be providing tips to make your time on the Internet more secure. This week, our focus is on Social Media Profile Security. Make sure to use different passwords for your social media accounts. This ensures hackers won’t obtain access to all your information.

Citizens and their loved ones can prepare by dedicating a little time each week this month by focusing on the tips below:

  • Social Media Profile Security
Make sure to use different passwords for your social media accounts. This ensures hackers won’t obtain access to all your information.
  • Profile Management
Let’s not forget to protect your home network by changing the administrative and Wi-Fi passwords regularly. When configuring your router, choose the Wi-Fi Protected Access 2 (WPA2) Advanced Encryption Standard (AES) setting, which is the strongest encryption option.
  • Mobile Device Safety
Can hackers only gain access to your information through computers? No, mobile devices, gaming systems, and other devices can lead hackers to your information as well. For your mobile device, use a PIN or password that only you would know. That way, if your phone is lost or stolen, the information on your phone is secure. Be careful when connecting your mobile device to an unknown Wi-Fi. This is another way cybercriminals can use Wi-Fi to gain access to your information.
  • Phishing – Suspicious Phone Calls and Emails
Phishing tricks users to provide sensitive information to cyber criminals via email. These emails appear similar to trustworthy email addresses, but they are only used to acquire credentials, financial information, or other sensitive data. Have you been receiving spam calls pretending to be from companies looking to get your personal information? Either stay on the phone and choose the option to take your number off the list for future calls or block this number.
